Welcome to my little corner of the internet, The Hygge Homemaker! My hope is to inspire you to make your home a hygge place for people to gather and memories to be made!
Get To Know Me
My name is Bethany Bickel, a stay at home wife and mom living in a small town on the MN-SD border. I am married to my wonderful husband Christian and together we have one son Ezra.
I was born and raised in a small town on the border of MN-SD where my family has lived for 5 generations! After high school I ventured to the Twin Cities where I received degrees in Biblical Studies and Cosmetology. During my time at the Free Lutheran Bible College I met my now husband Christian who was originally from CA. We married in 2021 and lived in the suburbs for 2 years. When we found out we were expecting our first baby we made the decision to return to my hometown to be near family.
Once we arrived, my husband started his own home service business (Lawrence Home Services) and I was blessed to be able to stay at home with our son. Fast forward a little over a year and I am writing this About page!
Why The Hygge Homemaker
So you may be asking as someone with training in Biblical Studies and Cosmetology, what will this blog include. Well, at the heart of this blog is my love for hosting and bringing people together in a casual yet special kind of way. As I pondered what to name this blog I was reminded of the Danish word hygge that I had found so intriguing in the past. I did more research and realized, “Yes, that is exactly what I want to encompass in my life and on my blog.”
So What Does Hygge Mean Exactly
Well, I would like to say that it is simple or that there was a direct English translation but that is not the case. Hygge, pronounced hyoo-guh, is a Danish word that can be used as a noun, adjective, or verb. A few of my favorite descriptions of hygge are these:
“Creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people.”
“The feeling of being warm, comfortable, and safe.”
“A calm, comfortable time with people you love; a complete absence of frustrations or anything emotionally overwhelming, often enjoyed with good food, drinks, warm blankets and candlelight.”
Beyond just the feelings of hygge, as a Christ follower, there is an even deeper joy that all this can flow forth from. When you wholly put your trust and faith in Christ you can rest knowing that He is working all things out for His good. In this life we will never experience, “the complete absence of frustrations or anything emotionally overwhelming.” However, God does allow us to experience glipses of that here on earth and I believe we do have the ability to cultivate that right in our own homes. That is what I would like to share with you here.
